Working At Yankee Candles And Macy’s A Conflict Of Interest?

Published by Tiffany under Yankee Candles

If I have been working at Macys in the makeup counter for 5 years and now want to go get a part time job at Yankee candles one day a week. Is that a conflict of intrest for Macys?? One HR lady working in Macys said it was. I think they just do not want me working in Yankee Candles, what do you think? What should I do?

In the mall where I work, candles, candleholders, decorative accents, potpourri, room sprays, and other items like that are sold both in the Macy’s home department and the Yankee Candle store. This comes into play particularly during the winter holidays, when Macy’s Home stocks a LOT of Christmas-themed decorative stuff, including candles and scented whatnots, and Yankee Candle simultaneously ramps up its marketing for the same items, since the holiday season is their biggest sales period. While there is no conflict within your particular department, there may be for the store/chain as a whole. I think HR’s opinion was valid.

Ask her why there is a conflict of interest. I didn’t know Macy’s had a huge candle department so I must have missed something (sorry for the sarcasm :) ).
Unless you work in sales or have access to something that could affect the amount of sales that are made, I don’t see the problem.
